5 Types of Protein for Bariatric Surgery Patients

Getting enough protein after bariatric surgery can be hard, and many patients find that protein supplements help them reach their protein requirements. Protein powder that can be made into shakes is one of the most popular ways to consume protein, but there are also snack-based supplements, protein milks, protein water and more. You can also find different types of protein supplements to support your goals. This is because protein sources affect each person differently. Here’s everything you need to know about the types of protein that you’ll find in protein supplements.

Whey Protein

The most popular protein to find in supplements is whey. Whey originates from milk that has been curdled and strained, and it’s a byproduct of cheese manufacturing. It contains all nine essential amino acids, is easy to digest and has a high biological value. However, due to its dairy content, it is not suitable for lactose intolerant individuals, vegans or those with milk allergies.

Casein Protein

For those looking to lose weight, casein protein might be a better choice than whey protein. It has similar origins, coming from cow’s milk. Along with containing the same amino acids as whey protein, it has a slow-release property that controls hunger, helps patients maintain muscle mass and aids in weight management. Like whey protein, due to its dairy content, it is not suitable for lactose intolerant individuals, vegans or those with milk allergies.

Soy Protein

Vegetarians and vegans are likely to know a lot about soy protein, as it’s often a main source of protein in plant-based diets. This type of protein comes from the soybean. This complete protein source is low in fat, vegan-friendly, dairy allergy friendly and heart healthy. Some individuals experience digestive discomfort with this type of protein. Soy also contains phytoestrogens, which are generally considered safe but shouldn’t be the sole source of protein.

Pea Protein

Another option for vegetarians is pea protein. It’s easily digestible, hypoallergenic and vegan-friendly. It’s the protein source used in Beyond Meat, a line of popular meat replacement products. It’s easier to digest than soy protein, hypoallergenic and vegan-friendly. However, it can be more expensive, and some people don’t enjoy the taste.

Brown Rice Protein

Rice protein can be a great choice for some, especially those with soy or pea allergies. It has most of the same benefits as pea protein. However, it tends to be on the expensive side. Pea protein and brown rice protein are both missing certain amino acids, so some find that combining the two is the best solution.

I always tell my patients that one of the most important things after bariatric surgery is to eat your protein! Whichever type of supplement you choose, you need to keep track of your protein intake and make sure you’re meeting your goals. Start the year off right by finding the best protein supplement and sticking with it!
