Clever Ways to Work Cardio Into Your Routine

Some people love working out and find that the endorphins are enough of a reward. Others might prefer the thrill of weightlifting or the challenge of pilates or yoga. However, one piece to the exercise puzzle can be tricky for even the most dedicated gym goer: cardio. Getting enough cardio can feel like a challenge. Spending an hour or more on a treadmill or stair stepper sounds exhausting. Fortunately, you can get the cardio you need without ever stepping foot in a gym. Here are a few ways I recommend working cardio into your daily routine:

Challenge Yourself During Daily Activities

When we’re trying to get somewhere, we often think of efficiency first. What’s the quickest way to get from point A to point B? By looking at it differently, you can work on your health while getting to where you need to go. For example, when you’re parking, find a parking spot that’s further away so you can get more steps in. If you typically take the elevator, consider switching it up and taking the stairs (even if for a few flights). Every little bit of cardio helps get you closer to your goals.

Get Your Cardio at Home

Since the pandemic and the influx of home gyms, there’s now all kinds of workout equipment you can get for your home. Desk treadmills and under-the-desk elliptical machines have retained popularity, especially as many jobs continue to be remote or hybrid in nature. Aside from using a compact cardio machine, you can also try doing exercises like dancing or skipping rope while watching TV or during video game cutscenes. If you haven’t been outside in a while, consider taking an evening walk around the neighborhood.

Find a Virtual Option

Sometimes, it feels like there’s no time to get the exercise you need. Or maybe you need an extra push for motivation. If this sounds like you, consider joining virtual running or cycling challenges. If you’re still working your way up to running, you can also find virtual walking challenges. Many of these offer some kind of reward, like a medal, for completing the challenge.

Make it a Social Event

As an adult, you may find it more difficult to rally your friends to join you in fitness activities. If you enjoy playing team sports, or if you’re curious about it, consider joining a recreational league. Make some new friends, and get some exercise while learning new skills or brushing up on old ones. If you’re not into team sports, you can also look into group fitness classes. Sometimes, all it takes is knowing that you’re meeting up with someone, even if it’s not anyone you know outside of class.

Take Up a New Hobby

It can be hard to find the perfect way to get cardio without getting burnt out. Running isn’t for everyone, and you may not be naturally athletic. One great way to incorporate cardio into your routine is to take up a cardio-forward hobby. Try hiking if you’re looking for a rewarding way to get your steps in. Consider swimming if you love the water and need to get more cardio in. There are always ways to make cardio fun.

However you get your cardio, remember that it’s recommended to get about 30 minutes in every day. You may want to start with 15 minutes every day and work your way up. As you build strength, you might even find that you prefer to do more than 30 minutes at a time. Every step you take is a step in the direction of your goals!
