In 2003, a group of men began a movement called Movember, where men would grow and wear mustaches in the month of November to raise awareness about men’s health. Now a global movement, Movember focuses on issues that disproportionately impact men, such as suicide and other mental health challenges, and male-specific issues like prostate cancer and testicular cancer. In honor of this awareness month, let’s take a moment to focus on men’s health.
For any health outcome, prevention and early detection are key. This is especially true for men, who are more likely to die by suicide, develop certain cancers and deal with heart disease. Focusing on men’s health is crucial because, while men have these concerns, society has traditionally told them to toughen up and power through. One study claims that women are 33 percent more likely to see a doctor than men when they have health concerns. When you’re showing early signs of a mental health crisis or a complex disease, this can be a matter of life and death.
One way to be more mindful of men’s health this Movember is to be aware of the most common health concerns impacting men and how they can be prevented. While not all disease is preventable, there are often ways of slowing down progression or reversing symptoms.
Some of the most common concerns men face include the following:
Eating healthy, exercising and managing stress are key factors in prioritizing your overall health. The most important action you can take is reaching out when things aren’t right. If you find yourself dealing with unexplained pain or symptoms, call a doctor. When your mental health feels unbalanced, reach out for support. Take the important steps now to get back on track so you can live the long, healthy life you deserve.
Remember, you are not alone. Whatever you’re dealing with, you can find support and get to a better, healthier place. If you’re looking to support the men in your life, reach out every once in a while, even when things seem fine. And if you’re a man looking for support, do the brave thing, and seek it out. You’ve got this.
